What is Niacinamide ?
Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a form of Vitamin B3. It is a water-soluble vitamin with anti-inflammatory properties. Found in liver, meat, green leafy vegetables, wheat, oats, nuts, milk, and fish, the body does not store niacinamide and needs regular amounts to maintain health. As a skincare agent it has many benefits and readily penetrates the skin for delivery in significant concentrations to the underlying derma.
Niacinamide in skincare
Niacinamide is incredibly popular as a skin care product and has many beneficial effects on all skin types. Chief among those is its pore tightening and sebum regulating properties. Niacinamide also has a beneficial effect on acne-prone skin and in improving atopic dermatitis. It is an antioxidant, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory agent. Use with niacinamide shows a decrease in wrinkles, pigmentation, scars, and other marks as well as improved hydration.
Niacinamide minimizes pores and controls sebum production
Niacinamide visibly improves texture and tightens the pores. Pores are reduced in size after niacinamide reduces sebum production. The sebum clumps up in pores, which enlarge as a result. Controlling sebum levels result in smaller pores and smoother skin.
Niacinamide improves acne
Studies show that niacinamide is as effective an anti-acne agent as a topical antibiotic lotion. Niacinamide reduces sebum, which clumps up in pores and forms blackheads and whiteheads that cause acne. Niacinamide also has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties that clean the skin without aggravating it in any way.
Niacinamide as an anti-aging agent
It is thought that niacinamide increases collagen production, which plumps up the skin and keeps it flexible and elastic. The use of niacinamide significantly reduces fine lines and wrinkles while visibly tightening up the skin.
Niacinamide reduces pigmentation
Studies show that the use of niacinamide causes a reduction in pigmentation, age spots, and other marks on the skin. Niacinamide also has a lightning effect on the skin.
Niacinamide is an anti-oxidizing agent and reduces dullness
Niacinamide has significant antioxidative properties. That means that it can limit and somewhat reverse free-radical damage that occurs as we age. Niacinamide also reverses aging by protecting skin from sun damage and by helping skin to retain moisture, thereby brightening and hydrating skin. It also strengthens the surface of the skin.
Popular Niacinamide Products; The Ordinary’s Niacinamide and Zinc Serums
Niacinamide is used along with other skincare products such as antioxidants, moisturizers, and exfoliants. All skin types easily tolerate niacinamide as a topical skincare product. Popular skincare products containing niacinamide include the Ordinary’s 10% Niacinamide and Zinc Serum, Panah Labs 10% Niacinamide + Zinc and Paula’s Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster.
